Disney greenlit the Percy Jackson television show at the start of this year, and filming is set to begin in June in Vancouver. In 2020, Riordan officially announced that Disney+ was developing a television series that will be faithful to the Percy Jackson series and that he and his wife Becky Riordan are going to be involved in every step of the series' production process.

Telling the story of Greek gods and young heroes in the 21st century, The Lightning Thief, the first book in Riordan's Percy Jackson & The Olympians series, was published in 2005.
